What's the difference between lunar and solar calendars?
The solar (Gregorian) calendar follows Earth's orbit around the sun (~365.24 days). The Chinese lunar calendar months follow moon phases (~29.53 days) and add leap months and solar terms to stay aligned with the solar year, so dates shift annually.
How do leap months work?
A lunar year is about 354 days - roughly 11 days short of a solar year. To avoid drift, a leap month (a repeat of an existing month) is added about every 2-3 years. This tool automatically lists leap months when they exist.
How is the Gan-Zhi year calculated?
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches combine into 60 pairs that cycle yearly. This tool uses LiChun (Start of Spring) as the year boundary, following traditional astrology convention.
